The .224 projectiles have proven itself from medium to long range gong shoots to a great caliber for short to medium distance hunting and varminting. The range of bullets that seem to be the most popular is in the 55 to 75 grain range. The trajectories with a muzzle velocity around the 3100 to 3800 ft/s mark, makes this a useful rifle for hunting varmint animals to medium bodied antelope like Springbuck, Fallow Deer and Blesbuck. The ability of the 223 Remington Caliber to achieve good velocity with moderate recoil and still deliver knock down power, make it a great choice for competition shooters and hunters alike.
Sako 85 Varmint Stainless 223 Remington Features
Laminated Stock
The Sako 85 Stainless Varmint rifle has a laminated stock that features a sligtly raised comb and shadow line cheekpiece on the left hand side of the stock. Although it can be used by left handed shooters and hunters, the stock design fits right handed shooters better. It has a slight palm swell that fit most hands comfortably and is shaped in such a way that the finger align comfortably with the trigger. The Laminated stock is very stable, warp and weather resistant.
Grip and For-end
The for-end of the stock has a checkered pattern to ensure a firm grip in the wettest conditions. It has a nice comfortable fit in hand and contribute to the rifle’s fine balance and handling characteristics. Swivel studs come standard on the stock for the attachment of a rifle sling or bi-pod. The inletting of the stock also ensure a free floating barrel. The stock also has a pronounced pistol grip, enhancing the ergonomics of the stock. It also adds to the comfort of shooting the rifle in a prone position.
Durable Recoil Pad
Sako 85 Rifles are fitted with the latest in recoil pad technology. It reduces the impact of the recoil on the shooter which is a very useful feature, especially on the heavy recoiling calibers. The robust pad allows you to fully concentrate on the accuracy of your shots.
Trigger
The wide trigger with a crisp break is adjustable from 2 to 4 lb pull weight. It can be easily adjusted by the user without removing the stock. The trigger is protected by a steel trigger guard.
Bolt
A one-piece, full-diameter bolt with three locking lugs locks within the barrel extension. The bolt release is on the receiver’s left side. The ejector is mounted on the receiver. The extractor is mounted on the bolthead. The Sako 85 action has both push and controlled feed characteristics. A red cocking indicator protrudes from the bolt’s rear. The one piece bolt opens with a 70° bolt handle lift.
Sako matches the size of the action to the caliber.
Sako’s combination of the extractor riding low in the ejection port and the receiver mounted ejector means that fired cases leave the action at a low angle and can be neatly deposited in the shooters hand by opening the bolt slowly.

The Stainless barrel on the Sako 85 Varmint Stainless is absolute class Sako engineering. Sako 85 barrels are hammer-forged and every Sako rifle has a 5 shot 1 MOA guarantee from 100 yards.
