The Sako 85 Brown Bear 338 Winchester Magnum is an absolute pleasure to handle. The quality of the workmanship, accuracy of the cold hammer forged barrel and beautiful lines of the high grade, laminate stock, make this truly a great safari rifle. The blued medium contour barrel with a barrel band and satin finish is available with a traditional open sights configuration.
Sako 85 Brown Bear and 338 Winchester Magnum combination
The Sako 85 Brown Bear chambered in the 338 Winchester Magnum Caliber is more of a specialist medium to long range rifle. The 338 Winchester Magnum is one of the most popular magnum cartridges for large game. Using heavy bullets with a moderate velocity resulting in a well-controlled expansion and a very good penetration – it is a time proven recipe of an efficient killer. Maybe even more important the moderate velocity makes the recoil tolerable to most hunters. The .338 projectiles has proven itself from long range gong shoots to a great caliber for longer distance hunting. The range of bullets that seem to be the most popular is in the 225 to 285 grain range. The flatter trajectories with a muzzle velocity around the 2750 to 3100 ft/s mark, makes this a useful rifle for hunting larger bodied antelope like Kudu, Eland and Blue Wildebeest.

[border ]The Sako 85 Brown Bear rifle has a high grade laminate stock that features a straight comb. It comes with a shadow line cheekpiece on the left hand side of the stock. Although it can be used by left handed shooters and hunters, the stock design fits right handed shooters better. It has a slight palm swell that fit most hands comfortably and is shaped in such a way that the finger align comfortably with the trigger. The laminate stock is very stable, warp and weather resistant with a beautiful classic lacquer finish.

Grip and For-end
[border ]The for-end of the stock has a checkered pattern to ensure a firm grip in the wettest conditions. It has a nice comfortable fit in hand and contribute to the rifle’s fine balance and handling characteristics. Swivel studs come standard on the stock for the attachment of a rifle sling or bi-pod. Trigger
[border ]The wide single stage trigger with a crisp break is adjustable from 2 to 4 lb pull weight. You can easily adjust without removing the stock. The trigger is protected by a steel trigger guard.

[border ]A one-piece, full-diameter bolt with three locking lugs locks within the barrel extension. The bolt release is on the receiver’s left side. The ejector is mounted on the receiver. The extractor is mounted on the bolthead. The Sako 85 Brown Bear action has a controlled cartridge feed. A red cocking indicator protrudes from the bolt’s rear. The one piece bolt opens with a 70° bolt handle lift.
Sako matches the size of the action to the caliber.
Sako’s combination of the extractor riding low in the ejection port and the receiver mounted ejector means that fired cases leave the action at a low angle and can be neatly deposited in the shooters hand by opening the bolt slowly.

Barrel
[border ]The Sako 85 Brown Bear comes with a medium contour barrel and is absolute class Sako engineering. It has been fitted with adjustable fast target acquisition iron sights. Sako 85 barrels are hammer-forged and every Sako rifle has a 5 shot 1 MOA guarantee from 100 yards. The ripple-free exterior and the minimal tooling marks on the inside are both indications of the quality of its construction. The muzzle is not threaded and features a target-style crown. The barrel has a satin finish.

Detachable Magazine
[border ]The magazine Sako pairs with this action is a five-round, double-stack magazine. The removable magazine has an all metal construction. Once inserted the magazine is flush fitting to the bottom of the stock. It also has to be pushed in for the latch to disengage the magazine. This function is to prevent the accidental release of the magazine.
