Vihtavuori 3N37 Handgun Powder was originally developed for .22 rimfire cartridges. However, it has since proven to be very versatile and desirable within all competitive handgun shooting disciplines.

In addition, Vihtavuori 3N37 has a burn rate very similar to N350, and can be used for many of the same applications. As handgun shooters began to experiment loading with 3N37, they found that this fine-grained powder loaded evenly through measures. Moreover, it gave excellent results from a range of competitive cartridges used for USPSA and IPSC practical shooting disciplines.

The 3N37 is tubular, porous powder type with grain dimensions of 0,6 mm length and 0,6 mm diameter. Therefore, the symmetrical grain size makes metering a breeze in powder measures. The burning rate of the 3N37 is close to N350 and on the medium scale of our handgun powders.

This is an excellent powder for 9 mm major loads for IPSC open competitions, and it’s very popular in USPSA and IPSC practical pistol shooting disciplines. In addition to practical shooting, 3N37 is also widely used as a submachine gun powder. Like all of our powders, 3N37 offers consistent, extreme precision, with clean burning. Therefore, it is used by the best shooters in the world.

Interesting fact: 3N37 was used back in the 1940’s by Sako for loading 9mm submachine gun cartridges.

What are smokeless powders?

Smokeless powders, or propellants, are essentially mixtures of chemicals. So, they are designed to burn under controlled conditions at the proper rate to fire a projectile from a firearm. Smokeless powders are made in three forms:

  • Thin, circular flakes or wafers
  • Small cylinders
  • Small spheres

Single-base smokeless powders derive their main source of energy from nitrocellulose. On the other hand, the energy released from double-base smokeless powders (such as the Vihtavuori N500 rifle powders) is derived from both nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine.
